Take the Lead is a good place to go if you like it friendly. Located in West Philly, this venue attracts a lot of UPenn and university students during the school year as well as a young professional crowd. In fact, best months to go are September and October when the school year starts.

This place is beginner friendly and attracts a lot of newcomers rather than performance level dancers. Fruit and chips are also available and included in the admission price. Check the website for schedule because it is only every other week and the schedule changes sometimes.

Pros:

  • Friendly beginner and intermediate level crowd.
  • Street parking is pretty simple.
  • A good place to go for people under 21.

Cons:

  • Music selection is limited.
  • Parties are only every other week.
  • Turnout can be low sometimes.
  • Too much lighting in the studio – kills the dance mood.
  • No longer a strong regular crowd.

Brasils has salsa dancing on Saturdays in Philadelphia. During the weekend, you will find mostly beginners plus a few intermediate level dancers. The DJ plays a respectable amount of salsa, but there is also bachata, merengue, cha-cha, and reggaeton later in the night.

Pros:

  • New faces and friendly people.
  • A nice mix of music besides salsa.
  • Usually a decent turnout.
  • Party atmosphere and good ambiance.

Cons:

  • Music is louder than most places and sometimes hard to talk to people.
  • Most advanced and intermediate dancers come out on Wednesdays instead. So if you are looking for better dancers, then Wednesdays is a better night.
  • $10 cover for guys instead of $5 on Wednesdays.
  • Street parking can be hard to find.

Details:

Brasils is one of the most popular salsa venues in Philadelphia. During the weekend, the crowd consists mostly of beginners a few intermediate level dancers. There is enough salsa music played for salsa lovers to get their dance on, but during the weekend, there is also more bachata, merengue, cha-cha, and reggaeton. Reggaeton usually starts later in the night though, after 11:30pm or midnight sometimes. Overall, if you want to salsa on Friday night, this is a place worth considering.

Pros:

  • Always new faces and people to dance with.
  • Good Music Mix if you like things other than salsa.
  • People are friendlier and less cliquish than on Wednesday.
  • Turnout is usually decent although it can vary.

Cons:

  • Music is loud – some people might want to bring ear plugs
  • Most advanced and intermediate level dancers come on Wednesdays because of the lower cover and intermediate level lesson. So if you are looking for better dancers, then Wednesdays is a better night.
  • $10 cover for guys versus $5 on Wednesdays.
  • Finding parking on the street is more difficult than during the week.

Parx Casino only started their Latin night in 2010, but it is still well attended. Convenient for people that live in Bensalem or Northeast Philadelphia, if you have a car. Different instructors teach the lesson each week and the lesson is beginner level usually. Get there after 9pm.

  • Big Dance Floor with plenty of space

Cons:

  • Bensalem location may be inconvenient for people who live in Philadelphia.

Vango is the place to be for Monday night salsa. It is Free – No Cover the whole night. The lesson is very basic and the same every week, so if you have never done salsa before it might be worth checking out. Otherwise, come later. The crowd starts to pick up after 10:30 pm usually. There are definitely some regulars… after all, it’s free.

Pros:

  • FREE
  • People are friendlier than other clubs
  • Good music – mix of salsa, bachata, merengue and a little cha-cha
  • Girl to guy ratio is about even
  • Along with the Reef on Tuesdays, this is one of the best clubs if you like bachata.

Cons:

  • Lesson is super basic. Skip it if you’ve ever danced salsa before.

Brasils is one of the most popular salsa venues in Philadelphia. This is the oldest salsa club in Philly and where a lot of experienced dancers go out to dance. The intermediate level lesson draws out many good dancers, so the level of dancing here is higher than at some other places, but beginners and new people often come here as well. The club is small and cozy and the dim lighting and decor make it a great party atmosphere.

Pros:

  • Always a good amount of dancers.
  • Usually a good mix of beginner and experienced dancers as well as regulars and new people.
  • Good Music: Mostly salsa, with some bachata and a little cha-cha and merengue occasionally.
  • Great ambiance.

Cons:

  • Too many guys sometimes
  • Music is very loud – bring ear plugs
